Third Trimester

 Third Trimester:

The third trimester is the final stage of pregnancy which begins from week 27 to the end of pregnancy. It is a time of great prediction and quick change for both you and your child. 

This trimester ends with birth. This period is stimulating both bodily and emotionally for a pregnant woman. A woman’s body faces a lot of changes during the third trimester. 

Symptoms:

Several physical changes may also take place during the third trimester such as:

  • Mood swings  

  • Shortness of breasts 

  • Augmentation in urine 

  • Stomachache or heartburn 

  • Swollen feet and ankles 

  • Scratchy skin 

  • Stinging gums and teeth feeling slacker

Changes in woman body: 

A woman may face more agony, pains, and puffiness during this last stage of pregnancy. The woman also becomes worried about her delivery. Some usual events which take place during this period are given as:

  • A lot of crusades by the baby

  • Braxton-Hicks’s narrowing which is casual tightening of uterus and typically not painful 

  • Going to bathroom more than normal 

  • Indigestion 

  • Inflammation 

  • Hemorrhoids or piles 

  • Tender breasts which may cause seepage of watery milk 

Changes to fetus:

Baby starts growing rapidly during this stage as some rapid growths are given below:

  • Baby’s bones are entirely molded. Baby can now open and close its eyes and intellect light. Baby’s body now become activate to accumulate minerals like iron and calcium. All these changes occur around week 32.

  • Baby should be in a head down position by the week 36 if does not then your doctor not trying to move the baby’s position.

  • Baby is considered full term and its organs are ready to function on their own after week 37. Now the baby is round about 19 to 21 inches ling and 6 or 9 pounds in weighs for a healthy woman.  

What to do during the third trimester:

  • Meet up with the doctor on regular basis:

You will see your doctor more repeatedly during the third trimester. Around week 36, your doctor may accomplish a Group B strep test to test for a bacterium that can be very detrimental to a baby.


Your doctor will recommend you antibiotics if your test is positive. Your doctor will check your development with a vaginal exam. Your cervix will become stripper and softer as you near your due date in order to help the birth canal open during the birthing process.

  • Personal health care:

A woman should take care of herself during this period. Given below are few good personal health measures to take by a woman during the third trimester:

  • Continue to get prenatal vitamins or folic acid 

  • Remain active unless you experience discomfort or inflammation 

  • Workout frequently (your pelvic floor by doing Kegel movements)

  • Drink plenty of water 

  • Eat healthy food like as fruits, green vegetables and a portion of food which contain a good amount of protein and dietary fiber in it

  • Remain yourself active by walking consistently 

  • Retain your teeth and gums well because poor dental cleanliness is related to premature labor 

  • Take plenty of rest and sleeping   

What to avoid during third trimester?

There are several things that should be avoided during the third trimester for your proper health which are given as:

  • Burnt seafood or raw fish 

  • Smoking 

  • White snapper fish because these fishes have high levels of mercury

  • Raw sprouts 

  • Alcohol 

  • Illicit drugs 

  • Energetic exercise or strength training which may cause a damage

  • Undercooked meat 

  • Too much caffeine 

  • Grubby food 

  • Unpasteurized milk  

  • Long car journeys and airplane trips if probable after 34 weeks, air company may not let you board the plane because of the opportunity of an unpredicted delivery on the plane or if it is necessary for you to travel then stretch your legs and walk about at least after an hour or two.


  • Some drugs are prescribed such as isotretinoin for acne, acitretin for psoriasis, thalidomide, and ACE used as an inhibitor for high blood pressure
